All animals are, like us, living, feeling beings

We think of some animals as our friends. Others we may think of as dangerous, and others we hardly think of at all. But all animals, from the family dog to the tiniest mouse, are, like us, living, feeling beings. We can learn more about how animals experience life by developing empathy toward themin other words, by identifying with their needs and feelings to understand them better.

For a classic example of writing that displays empathy toward an animal, read this passage from Anna Sewells classic novel, Black BeautyThe Autobiography of a Horse. In it, a horse named Ginger tells Black Beauty of her experience with humans. Then think about how the author shows empathy toward Ginger and her plight.

The man that had the care of us never gave me a kind word in my life. I do not mean that he ill-used me, but he did not care for us one bit further than to see that we had plenty to eat and shelter in the winter. Very often the great boys passing through would fling stones to make us gallop. I was never hit, but one young colt was badly cut in the face ... we settled it in our minds that boys were our enemies.
We had very good fun in the free meadows, galloping up and down ... and chasing each other round and round. But when it came to breaking in, that was a bad time for me; several men came to catch me ... one caught me by the nose ... so tight I could hardly draw my breath; ... and so by force they got on the halter and the bar in my mouth; one dragged me along by the halter, another flogging behind ... this was the first experience I had of mens kindness ...
... I had a good deal of spirit ... it was dreadful to be shut up in a stall day after day instead of having my liberty, and I fretted and pined and wanted to get loose.

Now imagine that you are any animal of your choice. Write a brief story from the animals point of view, based on the topic, If I had three wishes.

Forgotten Felines Inc. suggests the following volunteer activities for teens. Please e-mail them at forgottenfelines@yahoo.com or call 914-428-7969 for additional information.

What we really need from teens is for them to have tag sales, cookie sales, car washes, holiday sales (such as cards and wrapping paper or gift wrapping at local stores) and then donate the money to Forgotten Felines.

Or if they are older and good at ebay, they could sell things there and donate the proceeds. Or they could ask their parents to raffle off some gift/s at their local club and donate the proceeds.

Another idea is to give a birthday party or bbq in the name of their pet for which everyone donates money & new cat items and to donate the money
& cat items to Forgotten Felines.

Or collect the deposit on their bottles , their friends and neighbors and/or as a school or scout project and donate the proceeds to us. This also helps animals by being environmentally responsible.

Teens could also collect canned cat food (Science Diet, Friskies canned or Fancy Feast), dry cat food, litter (regular, scoopable, and the wood horse pellet bedding types) and new or in good condition cat related items. Or collect unused gifts that people do not want and donate them for our spring and fall fundraiser dinners where we have a silent auction. This is one of the most important ways we fund Forgotten Felines.

There is also a link on our website http://forgotttenfelines.petfinder.org where it says "CLICK ON THE LINK" for ways to help our kitties. Visitors will find many suggestions on how to help such as using the Goodsearch engine for their Internet searches and designating Forgotten Felines Valhalla NY as their charity. We receive about 1 cent for every time anyone uses it-- and the money certainly adds up.

Felines Valhalla NY as your charity. There are many popular stores on this list and they donate a certain amount to us at no extra cost to the person ordering. But you have to make sure they designate Forgotten
Felines VALHALLA NY as their organization as there are two other Forgotten Felines organizations that are not affiliated with us.

We would acknowledge teen volunteers in some form at one of our dinners (free admission) and present them with a bouquet of flowers or a plaque of appreciation etc. If they want to see the kitties that they are donating to, they are more than welcome to visit a FF foster home.
